What is an Associate MFT (AMFT)?

In California, an Associate MFT (AMFT) is a therapist who has completed their graduate education in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) along with a year of clinical experience with clients. AMFTs work under the supervision of a LMFT or another qualified mental health professional, as mandated by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). They provide therapy services to individuals, couples, families, and groups, and are trained to address a wide range of mental health and relational issues.

Qualifications to Become a Licensed MFT (LMFT):

To become an LMFT in California, individuals must meet specific educational and clinical requirements set forth by the BBS. These qualifications include:

  1. Master's Degree: Completing a master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy or a related field from an accredited graduate program. This degree provides them with the foundational knowledge and skills as well as one year practicum in field study necessary to provide therapy services.
  2. Clinical Experience: Complete a minimum of 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience, as mandated by the BBS. This experience involves providing therapy to clients under the supervision of a licensed MFT or another qualified mental health professional.
  3. Exams: Pass two exams administered by the BBS, which assess their knowledge and competency in Marriage and Family Therapy. These exams include the California Law and Ethics Exam and the Clinical Exam.
  4. Continuing Education: mental health professionals are required to participate in ongoing professional development through continuing education courses to maintain and enhance their clinical skills and knowledge.

How Can an Associate MFT (AMFT) Help You?

AMFTs are trained to provide therapy services to individuals, couples, families, and groups, and can address a wide range of mental health and relational issues. They work collaboratively with clients to help them gain insight, develop coping skills, and improve their emotional well-being. AMFTs provide a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and help them develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.
Although AMFTs work under supervision, they are trained professionals who are well-equipped to provide therapy services. They adhere to a code of ethics and maintain confidentiality, just like LMFTs. AMFTs also stay current with the latest research and best practices in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy through continuing education.
